hair loss

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the best answer to a medical problem is actually the one that has been practiced by grandmothers and mothers for years. It is the same way with this natural hair loss remedy. It is like chicken soup for colds. Probably for as long as mothers have been making chicken soup they have been treating the common cold with this natural remedy. I remember by grandmother always served home made chicken soup when one of us children had a cold. Now, come to find out, medical science has stated that there are actually compounds in the soup that not only make us feel better but also help to cure the cold faster. Modern science doesn’t always know what is best and it is that way with natural hair loss remedies.

Hair Loss Natural Remedy

One of the most effective hair loss natural remedies has been used by Native Americans in the US for generations. The Saw Palmetto plant is a three foot tall palm bush found in the Southeastern United States. It has been prized by native peoples as a treatment for male urinary tract problems. Interestingly, the most effective pharmaceutical to treat male pattern baldness was also originally used to treat these problems. Finasteride, the FDA approved drug, was in human trials for the treatment of enlarged prostate in men. During the study it was found that the drug did treat this problem but an interesting side effect was also noted. The men in the study who had been experiencing hair loss showed a marked improvement in the rate of hair loss and some even had some hair re-growth. Further studies showed it was effective for treating male pattern baldness and this is now its main use.

It turns out Finasteride treats the balding problem by limiting the production of DHT in the patient’s body. DHT is a metabolite of the male hormone testosterone which is created by the enzyme 5alpha-reductase. DHT actually attacks the hair roots causing them to stop producing hair shaft material. By limiting the levels of this substance the hair follicles can produce keratin or hair material.

The Saw Palmetto extract accomplishes the same goal. It limits the amount of DHT by natural methods. You can find the extract of this palm in Health Food stores and also on the internet. I have also recently seen it offered in grocery and drug stores now that people are finding that natural remedies for hair loss work just as well as the expensive drugs from the big pharma corporations. Natural hair restoration has become very popular like all other natural remedies.

Another natural hair loss remedy that works like Saw Palmetto is Stingy Nettle root. This natural plant can be found all over the US and Europe. It appears as though this natural root acts on the causes of hair loss by limiting DHT also. The Stingy Nettle root extract is not as widely available as the other natural remedy but it can still be found. As with any medical treatment be sure to consult with your doctor before taking any nutritional supplements.

I hear ads all the time on the radio that mention saw palmetto. It sounds like it’s good for a lot of things in the body. :) Any time you can avoid taking medication and let the body heal itself is a good thing.

    I agree Jennifer,
I think the big drug companies have shown the only thing they are interested in is profits they don’t really care if they help people or not.

    Albert,

If you get better then they don’t make any more $ off of you. They are in the biz to maintain your illness, not cure you. That’s what upsets me so.
