When it comes to looking for a hair loss treatment for men there are more options available than for women who are also suffering from thinning or balding hair. The vast majority of both men and women who lose their hair do so because of a condition known as Pattern Baldness or Pattern Hair Loss. This name actually derived from the results of the condition that are seen on a man’s head when he starts to go bald. Male pattern baldness, or Androgenic Alopecia, usually shows up as localized hair loss at the front of the scalp and the crown of the head first. These patterns of baldness gave the condition its name. When looking for a hair loss treatment for men you are usually going to be trying to find some way to deal with this pattern hair loss.
Hair Loss For Men Treatments
Hair loss treatments can be broken down into four broad categories. Drugs, surgery, natural methods, and laser treatments. Each of these has their place depending on the desires of the person who is losing their hair. We will start from the most used and go from their.
The first method to treat a loss of hair in men is drugs that have been shown by the US Food and Drug Administration to help in the relief of hair loss. The first drug, Finasteride, was actually developed to treat male urinary tract problems, in particular the enlarged prostate, but during clinical studies it was also noticed that hair loss stopped in most men and some saw improved hair growth. This drug is not a hair loss treatment for women though as there is a high probability for birth defects. Finasteride is taken daily as a pill and is only available by prescription.
The second FDA approved drug is Minoxidil. This is usually applied as a topical solution with the brand name Rogaine. This drug was also found accidentally. Originally Minoxidil was developed to treat high blood pressure by causing the small blood vessels in the body to increase in cross section. It was noticed during treatments that men who used this drug also saw improvements in their hair loss. It is thought that this substance improves the blood flow to the hair follicles thus keeping them healthy. This particular drug is used as a treatment for female hair loss as it seems to be safe for both sexes.
Natural Hair Loss Treatment For Men
There are several natural remedies that claim to be useful for treating hair loss but most have not been through clinical trials. The two most often cited are Saw Palmetto and Nettle Root. Interestingly enough, both of these have been used as remedies for male urinary tract problems by native people. They seem to have the same effect as the drug Finasteride which we looked at above.
The other two hair loss treatments for men are more technical in nature. If you don’t have good results with the methods described above you may want to look into hair restoration surgery. This is not a hair loss treatment but more a hair loss procedure but it is very effective at increasing hair growth in a bald or balding area. The procedure involves removing hair follicles from an area where there is no balding, usually the back of the head for men, and implanting those follicles into the area with hair loss. This method is fairly expensive but it gives the patient good hair growth for years to come.
The second of the more technical procedures is laser hair restoration. This treatment for hair loss in men is based on the idea that light energy can be used to excite the growth of hair. Using a low energy level laser source, the laser comb or laser brush as they are known, increases the blood flow to the scalp and thus the hair follicles that are being starved by the effects of male pattern baldness.
Finding the right hair loss treatment for men is really a matter of trying different methods until you determine which one works best for you. Don’t stop looking. You can receive help with your loss of hair so keep searching.
