hair loss

When a man or a woman starts to lose their hair due to balding conditions it can be very traumatic. In this country we are fascinated with youth and continue to seek out youthful appearances for ourselves even when we reach old age. When confronted with a balding situation one place many people turn to is home remedies for hair loss. This is understandable because as the man or women starts to feel old as a result of this hair loss, he or she will grasp at anything to keep there hair growing and replace that which has fallen out. The question is whether a home remedy for hair loss really is beneficial or not.

The majority of the people who suffer age related hair thinning and baldness are suffering from Pattern Baldness. There is both Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Baldness but, in reality, they are both caused by the same problem even though the resulting loss of hair shows up differently in men and women. Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition that can be passed either from the mother’s side of the family or the father’s. For years it was thought that only the maternal line could pass this problem along which is why the old wives tale warned that if your mother’s brothers were bald you probably would be too. It has now been found to be a genetic hair loss condition that can be passed from the father also.

The basics of pattern baldness are that a hormonal metabolite derived from the male hormone testosterone is the main culprit. This agent, called DHT, affects the hair follicles in certain areas of the scalp and weakens them. Hair goes through growth and rest cycles and the DHT seems to act to shorten the length of time the hair grows each time. Eventually the hair shaft is so weakened that it falls out and the follicle can not re-grow it. The follicle is now nonfunctioning and will not grow any more hair. In order to stop balding the only way to deal with the problem is to limit or counteract the affects of the DHT.

Natural Home Hair Loss Remedies

Most of the home remedies do not really attack the problem of hair loss. They deal with the external scalp and hair shafts and not the root of the problem at the hair follicle or hair roots. Jojoba oil and aloe vera are both touted as being a good hair loss home remedy but in reality they really won’t do much to attack the cause. They may make your scalp feel good and make what hair you have nice and soft but they will not get the hair follicles growing again.

Two natural home remedies for hair loss that do seem to be affective are a couple of extracts from natural plants. Saw Palmetto and Nettle Root both have been shown to have an affect on the amount of DHT produced in the body. Like the FDA approved drug Finasteride, these two natural remedies treat both hair loss and male urinary problems as both of these conditions are caused by a build up of DHT in the body. Neither of these will do much to re-grow hair that has been lost though. By the time the hair falls out, the follicle has usually been damaged beyond repair.

Thinning Hair In Women Home Remedies

The drug Finasteride, mentioned above, does seem to help men keep their hair longer but it is not recommended for women. It has a tendency to cause birth defects. In particular, it can cause unnatural growth in male fetus’s genitals so women are not even supposed to touch the tablets for fear they will ingest the ingredient through the skin. The same affect may be present with Saw Palemetto and Nettle Root since they work like the drug but it has not been proven for sure.

If you are looking for a hair loss remedy your best bet would be to talk to your doctor. There are a lot of people who will try to sell you something to put on your head but most of it does nothing for the original problem.
