The term laser hair treatment can be taken to mean two completely different things. It can either mean laser hair loss treatments or laser treatment for hair removal. It is interesting that one term can have two opposite meanings but that seems to be the case in this instance. I am not sure which meaning you are interested in so I will discuss both uses of lasers for hair treatments. First we will look at using lasers to remove ugly, unwanted hair and then we will explore the concept of using laser to regrow hair.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Low level lasers have been used for over a decade to get rid of hair that is unwanted and growing in the wrong place. Some people worry about using laser when they are used to seeing things being blown up on Star Trek and Star Wars but the health care lasers are nothing like these. When a patient has laser hair removal treatment there is no chance that they will blow up like a space ship. At the very worst you may feel a little discomfort like a slight sun burn for a few days but that goes away quickly.

The functioning of a laser to remove hair is really easy to understand. At the base of the hair shaft is the hair follicle which is the bulb that actually creates the hair shaft material from oxygen and nutrients in the blood supply. This follicle also stores the pigments that make the hair what ever color it is naturally. The laser is tuned to heat only the pigment when they are directed at the follicle. The light energy travels through the skin without interruption because it is not tuned for the color of the skin. When it hits the follicle, though, it acts to cause the pigment molecules to start vibrating very fast. This vibration causes heat which kills the hair follicle. The hair shaft then falls out and the patient ends up with smooth skin instead of ugly hairs.

Laser Hair Growth Treatment

Now lets look at the other laser hair treatments this time from the angle of getting more hair instead of getting rid of hair. Actually, using the term laser for the laser comb and laser brush are a stretch of the term. These medical devices actually have a series of diodes which emit a wave length of light that matches the summer sun. The theory is that since hair grows faster in summer it must be because the sun is more powerful at that time. Thus if the wavelength of light from the sun is mimicked then the hair should grow faster again.

There have not been scientific studies completed about the effectiveness of laser treatments for hair but anecdotal evidence is overwhelming with positive review. The US FDA has not offered a ruling on the efficacy of the laser comb or laser brush at this time. They have stated that it causes no harm but they have not said it actually does any good. Independent studies are now being performed but the results have not been published yet.
