Anyone can start losing their hair at a time when they least expect it, even women can experience balding. Balding is a somewhat awkward consequence of a host of factors that all combine to contribute towards eventual hair loss. However, hair restoration for women is a solution that promises to reverse the irritating effects of hair loss. The fortunate thing about the different balding treatments is that they are flexible enough to meet all our different needs, be it if we prefer medications or natural treatments as cures.

To start with, medical procedures have recently been introduced as alternative forms of treatment to pharmaceutical drugs and natural herbs. Various side effects come with prescribing to the aforementioned medical procedures. Rogaine has been known for causing itchiness and Propecia can bring about erectile dysfunction in males and depression. As for scalp reduction surgery and hair transplants, bruising and scarring are somewhat obvious side effects.

Like men, the majority of women who suffer hair loss have a condition known as Androgenetic Alopecia or female pattern baldness. There are other causes of hair loss including Traction Alopecia which is caused by the pulling of the hair by braids, pony tails, and the like. Also, medications and medical procedures can cause hair loss along with hormonal imbalances due to pregnancy. But the majority of women suffer from female pattern hair loss and thus need a female hair restoration process that will treat their specific issues.

When men have pattern baldness they tend to lose their hair in a set pattern which is where the name came from. In particular, a man will usually have a receding hair line and/or balding at the crown of the head. This will eventually expand until the entire top of the head is bald. Luckily, there is an active ingredient in some hair loss formulas that has proven effective for hair restoration in women.

Hair Restoration Products For Women

Minoxidil is a drug that has been approved for hair loss and also has been shown to be safe for women. This is different than another drug, Finasteride, that is very effective for hair loss in men but causes birth defects so is not allowed to be used by women. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp twice a day and rubbed in, then it is left to soak in to the skin. There are two solution strengths available. A 2% solution and a 5% solution. In general women have been told to use the 2% mixture because some research studies seemed to indicate that this was more effective for female hair restoration than the stronger mixture. Recently, though, the feeling is that women should apply the more concentrated substance like men do. It makes sense that the more Minoxidil that can be applied to the scalp the better it would work.

As far as hair restoration products go, Minoxidil does a very good job of helping to stop hair loss and it even can allow some hair follicles to begin producing keratin again if they have not been dormant too long.

What is causing this hair loss is a genetic condition known as Androgenic Alopecia. This is a fancy term for the fact that there are certain hormones in our androgynous system that will cause hair follicles to stop producing hair when they are genetically pre-dispose to this condition. Hair loss from this condition is also known as pattern baldness and pattern hair loss. Both men and women can suffer from this condition but it generally is more noticeable in men because they lose patches of hair where as women have more of a hair thinning problem.

A quick explanation of the problem goes like this. If a man is susceptible to hair loss because of his genetic make up then he has receptors located on the hair follicles in the frontal and top scalp area along with the crown of the head. These receptors bond with the free hormone, DHT, in the blood stream. Once enough DHT has built up it starts to shut off the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicle. This shortens the growth phases of the hair causing them to get weaker and weaker. Eventually, the hair shaft falls out and the follicle becomes encased in fibrotic material like scarring. At this point the hair follicle will not grow any more hair.

Men-Hair Restoration

Once a man has lost use of the hair growth mechanisms the only option for treating the baldness is with hair implants also known as male hair restoration. This men hair restoration procedure has become quite common and very successful over the fifty years it has been in use. Basically, a cosmetic surgeon will map out the area of baldness and determine how many hair follicles need to be transplanted in order to give a good hair appearance again. He or she will also determine the direction and spacing needed for the individual hair units to be implanted.

The next step to the hair restoration for men procedure is to remove a patch of scalp from an area that still has good hair growth. Interestingly enough, most men do not experience any loss of hair from the back of the head when they are suffering from male pattern baldness. Thus this gives the surgeon a good area to transplant the follicles from. Once the strip of scalp is removed the individual hair units in groups of one to three follicles are separated from the surrounding tissue and prepared for insertion. The surgeon then makes very small slits or holes in the scalp at the balding area and implants the hair units. Sometimes as many as a few thousand units will need to be transplanted in order to give a good full head of hair. Usually, within six months after the procedure the patient will begin to see the beginnings of good hair growth again.

Women-Hair Restoration

The procedure for women’s hair restoration is more complex because instead of bald patches women usually develop hair thinning over the entire scalp. This does not give a good donation area for the surgeon to utilize. Instead, individual hair units must be manipulated or hair from other parts of the body can be used for filler.

The fact is, once a man has bald spots the best and often times only way to get hair growing there again is with the men hair restoration procedure. This is not cheap but it gives a very nice result that will give you growing hair for years to come.

Women’s Hair Loss

Like men, the majority of long term hair loss experienced by women is due to a genetic condition known as androgenic alopecia also known as pattern hair loss or pattern baldness. There are other causes such as hormonal imbalance, traction alopecia such as tight ponytails and braids, and accidents. But the majority of long term hair loss that requires female hair restoration is caused by pattern hair loss.

This condition is caused by a hormone in the body called DHT. This is actually a metabolite of the male hormone testosterone that both men and women have in their makeup. Certain hair follicles on the scalp are susceptible to the DHT bonding on receptors at the hair roots. This bonding then shortens the growth phase of the hair with each cycle and eventually the hair shaft can not be sustained and it falls out. The best method for treating hair loss is to attack it early. The US FDA has approved two drugs for the treatment of hair loss in men. Unfortunately, the most powerful drug, which is known as Finasteride, is not available for women due to the possibility of birth defects in male infants. In particular, it seems to affect male sexual organ development during pregnancy.

The second drug, known as Minoxidil, is applied topically to the scalp at the areas of hair loss. This is usually sold under the brand name Rogaine but several genetic varieties are now available. Minoxidil is a vasodilator originally developed to treat high blood pressure. In causes an increase in the size of the tiny blood vessels and it is thought this allows more blood flow to the hair follicles which allow them to continue to produce hair shaft material. Women usually apply a 2% solution of Minoxidil twice a day whereas men use a 5% solution. The lower dosage seems to actually be more effective on a woman’s scalp for some reason that is under investigation. This is the best method for female hair restoration in the sense that it helps to keep the existing hair growing longer.

Hair Restoration In Women

Once the follicle has gone completely dormant the only option for getting growing hair in that particular spot is to have hair transplants. Women and men differ in how pattern baldness affects their hair loss and this causes problems when using hair transplants for women. The term pattern baldness comes from the fact that men tend to lose hair at the front of the scalp, receding hair line, along with the vertex and the crown. This leaves a good area of hair growth at the back of the head for follicular donation. That is, there is a lot of hair for transplant into the balding areas.

Women, on the other hand, tend to lose their hair over the entire head. Thus when planning a hair restoration in women procedure the surgeon must determine a good area to use for donation. The fact that the hair was thinning over the entire head made it difficult to find hair follicles on the scalp. Recently a new procedure known as Follicular Unit Extraction has been utilized. With this method individual hair follicles or groups of one to three follicles can be transplanted. This has allowed for better transplants on the scalp but also allows for the use of hair from other areas of the body. This body hair is not as fine as scalp hair but it does work as a filler to fill in the thin areas.

Women hair restoration procedures are a little different than men’s but they are still worth exploring if you are suffering hair loss and thinning hair. Especially if you are active, you need a full head of hair that is your own and growing not some wig that can fall off at an inopportune time.

Spironolactone, usually prescribed for its diuretic effects, and Cimetidine which is used to help treat stomach ulcers can both block the action of androgens and thus help prevent hair loss in females.

By far the most common prescribed treatment for women after menopause is hormone replacement therapy, such as taking estrogen and progesterone pills or applying hormone cream topically. This is very effective for women who’s hair loss is due to hormonal changes.

Hair Restoration Systems

If you don’t want to be hassled with buying products to apply to your head everyday or you are worried about the side effects of drugs there are two other options. The first is hair restoration surgery. This involves removing living hair follicles from one area of the head and inserting them into the bald spot of the scalp. This hair restoration procedure is fairly expensive but it does work well.

The other option is to get a hair replacement system also known as a hair piece or toupee. With new manufacturing techniques and attachment systems they are almost completely unnoticeable. Whatever hair restoration treatment you choose to go you deserve to have a full head of hair once again.
