One method of hair loss treatment that is showing a decline in use is the toupee. These have been around for thousands of years and there is even a mention on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb of a toupee or hair piece being used by a noble man who was losing his hair. Mens toupees really had there high point in the 1950’s. That was the decade that saw the most men wearing a hair piece to cover up their bald spot. As time has gone on the topee has fallen out of favor as more and more men opt for a hair transplantation procedure or just decide to let themselves go bald.

Mens Toupee

Starting in the 1800’s the view of age changed. Up until that time young men would make fashion changes in order to appear older than they really were. This was because age and people of age were revered. During the 19th century this changed and men started to seek ways to appear younger than their age. At this time it was believed that men who were losing their hair were old and thus not to be viewed in a good light. At this time the mens toupee or hair piece became popular as a way to cover up the hair loss. Topees for men continued to be popular, some even being sold by mail from Sears, up until their usage waned in the 60’s.

Toupee For Men

The toupee is constructed of a base material in which either human or artificial hair is sewn into. The material this base is made of can be a big determiner of whether or not the toupee is easy to spot. The manufacturer will try to match the hair on the hair replacement system or toupee to the customer’s existing hair and sometimes it works. Often times, the hair shade does not match or the person’s hair color changes and the toupee then becomes very noticeable.

Most high quality hair pieces are help on with a toupee adhesive that does a great job of keeping the piece in the proper place. Cheaper alternatives will be hair bands and toupee clips. These do a much poorer job of keeping the hair in place and the wearer suffers the risk of the piece falling off at an inopportune time.

The use of toupees has decrease to the point that several manufacturers are in dire straits financially. There are so many options available now that most men don’t even consider this time honored hair loss solution. The new toupees, known as hair replacement systems, are hopefully going to rejuvenate the hair piece market.
